Stream Energy is a national energy provider offering electricity rates and plans in Texas.
While they don’t have the cheapest rates, their prices are affordable when compared to other fixed-rate plans with fairly straightforward prices.
While they were a multi-level marketing company, they’re now owned and operated by NRG. That means they have the backing of one of the biggest names in Texas electricity.
We don’t currently showcase Stream’s plans, but you can compare electricity rates to other top providers to see which one is right for you.

Stream Energy Electricity Plans
Stream Energy’s Texas plans include a number of one-year and multi-year fixed-rate terms, as well as variable-rate plans that can change monthly.
While they don’t have the best rates, their straightforward prices don’t include gimmicks that cause billing surprises. They’re one of the more stable light companies in Texas.
Popular Stream Energy plans include:
- Simple & Secure plans
- Conserve & Save plans
- Secure Choice plans
- Green & Clean plans
All of these plans have fixed, affordable rates. That said, to get their best rates, you’ll have to enroll in a longer-term contract. Their terms typically range from 12 to 36 months.
Other key features of these plans include:
- Fixed rates
- Transmission & Distribution Utility (TDU) fees
- Early Termination Fees (ETFs)
They also offer a month-to-month, variable rate plan, called their Flex Choice Intro. We don’t often recommend these plans because their prices vary based on demand, which can result in shocking bill surprises later on.
While they don’t have the cheapest rates, we can help you cut your energy usage, potentially lowering your energy bill and helping you save money.
If you’re looking for free electricity usage plans or energy plans with no deposit and no credit check, Stream doesn’t typically offer these types of plans.
That said, their sister company, Reliant Energy offers “free” energy plans and occasionally has no-deposit lights.
Call Reliant at 866-735-1218 for more information.
Green Energy
Stream offers 100% green energy through their Stream Green program.
It includes any electricity plan that is sourced from renewable energy. The Green Certification of a plan is a confirmation that the company purchased Renewable Energy Credits (RECs).
That means that clean energy was added to the Texas electric grid on behalf of customers who purchased their “eco+” add-on or enrolled in a green energy plan.

Switching, Moving, Cancellation Fees
If you’re moving, canceling plans, or switching companies, finding the best energy supplier with the cheapest rates can be challenging. That’s why we made our Savvy Shopper’s Guide.
But first, be sure to read any plan’s EFL.
Using the EFL
The Electricity Fact Label (EFL) is a Texas-mandated document that provides an apples-to-apples comparison of plans and rates. It also provides rates across set usage levels, 500, 1,000, and 2,000 kWh.
By getting an accurate comparison of electric plans and their associated rates, you can make sure the plan you’re considering is right for your home’s usage.
It’s also a good idea to get your exact historic usage using Smart Meter Texas.
To learn more, check out our Smart Meter guide.
Transferring your electricity service
It’s easy to transfer your service with Stream Energy to your new address in Texas. Just call the provider and provide them with your new address and the date of your move.
Be sure to notify them at least 30 days ahead of your move to make sure you don’t experience any lapse in service.
How do I cancel Stream Energy?
You can easily cancel your Stream plan by calling 888-685-7693 or by contacting them online.
If you cancel your contract before its end date, you may owe a cancellation fee, or Early Termination Fee (ETF).
Note that Stream often has higher ETFs, ranging from as low as $150 to as high as $395, depending on the length of your contract. Check the EFL to find your plan’s exact cancellation fee .
