Shell Energy Plans and Rates

Shell Energy offers a variety of electricity plans in Texas with affordable rates. They even offer plans with 100% or 50% renewable energy content. They have fixed-rate, price-protected plans that can help you save money and avoid bill surprises.

Fixed Standard plans

Shell offers their Fixed Standard electricity plans for competitive fixed energy rates with 14 or 36-month terms. These plans let you snag a low rate for longer terms. That means more savings and predictable bills, for longer.

Key features include:

  • Predictable, affordable rates
  • $0 base charge
  • $149 Early Termination Fee (ETF)

Note: there’s a $9.95 minimum usage fee if you use less than 1000kWh of electricity in a given month.

Fixed Renewable plans

Their Fixed Renewable electricity plans offer competitive fixed energy rates for 12, 24, and 36-month terms, allowing you to lock in low rates to save money and get more predictable bills.

Key features of this fixed-rate plan include:

  • 100% clean energy
  • $0 base charge
  • Early Termination Fee (ETF) of $20/month left in term

Note: there’s a $9.95 monthly fee if you use less than 1000kWh of electricity.

Shell also offers a 50% renewable energy plan, if you’re interested in having a mix of energy content.

EV Free Charging plans

With 12-month terms, Shell also offers EV Free Charging plans with price-protected, fixed rates. This plan lets you charge your electric vehicle for free during set hours.

Key features of this time-of-use plan include:

  • Free power from 12 am – 3 am
  • 100% clean energy
  • $0 base charge
  • $149 Early Termination Fee (ETF)

Shell also now offers popular time-of-use plans, including their SES Free Energy Nights plans and SES Free Energy Weekends plans.

These plans feature $4.95 base charges, competitive energy rates, and reasonable ETFs. Contract terms range from 12 to 24 months.

All of Shell’s plans are straightforward, price-protected plans with competitive energy rates and predictable bills compared to those with bill credits. Shell’s electricity plans are less likely to cause bill surprises.

While bill credit plans look very cheap, they may only apply to homes that have a narrow range of energy usage levels per month. If you don’t qualify, you may be in for a nasty bill surprise.

With a Shell fixed-rate plan, you’re also able to dramatically improve the predictability of your monthly bill and cut bill shocks. We don’t recommend variable rate plans offered by various suppliers, though they’re useful in special cases.

Renewable Energy Plans

All of Shell’s energy plans for Texans have some renewable energy content, but if you want completely clean energy, consider their Fixed Renewable plans, which are sourced from 100% renewable energy.

Renewable electricity plans like those Shell offers help reduce CO2 emissions.

If you already have solar panels installed (or you’re planning on getting solar panels), consider their solar buyback plans. Solar buyback plans allow you to generate your own electricity and automatically sell any excess energy back to the grid.

Starting Electricity Service

Starting your new energy service with Shell is a breeze. Just sign up online or by calling the light company directly.

When enrolling in a new plan, please note that Shell Energy doesn’t provide same-day service.

It’s also worth keeping in mind that their earliest service dates are typically two days out from the date of your enrollment.

While most light companies require a deposit, you may qualify for no-deposit electricity if you have a good credit score.

You may get a deposit waiver if you meet one of the following criteria:

  • Aged 65 years or older
  • Victim of domestic violence
  • Former or active-duty military
  • Applicants who have provided a letter of credit

Switching, Moving, and Cancellation Fees

Before switching, moving or canceling your Shell electricity plan, it’s best to know all of your options. You can get quick tips from our Savvy Shopper’s Guide, but your first step should be reading your EFL.

Understanding EFLs to choose a plan

Reading and understanding a plan’s Electricity Facts Label (EFL) can help you get an accurate comparison between plans and energy rates.

Another great idea before you transfer, move or cancel your plan is look into Smart Meter Texas to get an exact picture of your actual energy usage. Check out our Smart Meter Guide to learn more.

How do I cancel Shell Energy?

You can cancel your Shell electricity service any time online or over the phone. If you terminate your plan before the end of your contract, you may be responsible for an Early Termination Fee (ETF).

Typically, they charge an ETF of $20 per month remaining in your contract, although some of their time-of-use plans have a more standard ETF of $149.

Transferring Shell Energy plans

If you’re moving within Texas to another deregulated city you can transfer your Shell energy plan to your new address with no penalty or fee. We recommend contacting the light company 30 days in advance of your move to ensure a smooth transition.
